Filmstrip Engine

A beginner-friendly 2D RPG engine that does not want to fight you.

Start with visual tools, built-in RPG systems, and menus that explain what they actually do. Then, when you are ready, you can dig into the Python underneath and make things your own.

So, what is it?

Filmstrip Engine is a Windows-first engine for making small, top-down pixel RPGs. The goal is to land somewhere between RPG tools that lock you into one exact kind of game and larger engines that hand you an empty screen and wish you luck.

Who is it for?

Solo developers, pixel artists, writers, hobbyists, and beginner programmers. Basically, people who have a game they want to make without needing to spend six months learning an engine before they can put a little guy on the screen.

What matters to us?

Clear tools, readable menus, useful error messages, reusable components, and project files that do not feel like forbidden ancient knowledge. Filmstrip should help you understand what your game is doing instead of hiding everything behind magic buttons.

What are we not doing?

Filmstrip is not trying to replace Unity, Godot, or every other engine on the planet. We are focusing on small 2D RPGs, doing that job well, and keeping the engine approachable. Bigger and stranger things can come later. For now, we are making RPGs.
