Smart Tiles

Create Simple Terrain or Full Blob Smart Tiles that automatically select the correct neighbor shape.

Smart Tiles automatically choose the correct visual shape based on nearby cells. They are useful for paths, walls, cliffs, shorelines, terrain edges, and other connected regions.

Filmstrip provides two standard Smart Tile formats:

  • Format: Simple Terrain; Grid: 3×3; Required artwork: 9 tiles; Best for: Solid areas and exterior boundaries
  • Format: Full Blob Terrain; Grid: 8×6; Required artwork: 47 tiles; Best for: Interior corners, holes, channels, and irregular terrain

Standard authoring workflow

  1. Open Smart Tile Editor from the Window menu.
  2. Choose Simple Terrain or Full Blob Terrain.
  3. Enter the intended tile width and height.
  4. Choose Export Blank Template.
  5. Replace the guide artwork in your image editor without changing the canvas size.
  6. Choose Import Smart Tile BMP and select the completed sheet.

Filmstrip validates the image dimensions, copies it into the project, slices the sheet, builds the required mappings, saves the definition, and selects it in the Tile Palette.

If a correctly sized sheet was already imported through the Tile Palette, use Create From Selected Sheet instead.

Painting

Switch the Tile Palette to Auto and paint with Brush, Rectangle Fill, or Flood Fill. Neighboring cells update automatically. Manual tile placement remains available when a specific visual override is needed.

Advanced Mapping exists for unusual or legacy sheets, but it is not required for the normal workflow.
